It's because they can get away with it. When you have a fan base large enough to establish its own country, you can charge $300 for an autograph. If people would say "No, I won't pay that, you're a self-absorbed jackass," there'd be no charge, or at least a somewhat more reasonable charge.

yeah... stupid fans letting themselves be taken advantage of...
but yeah... back on topic... mini cons are fun too... it's usually just a dealers room which is the size of 3-4 event rooms... but the entrance is useually free... vendors tend to be cheap and it's just a lot of fun... i think there are two i go to... one in december and one in march... but i keep forgetting when i have cons... go to way too many

I'm not an expert on cons since I have only been to like three, but I think they are awesome.
And I agree with the last little topic on autographs. Rai knows what I'm going to talking about.
At last Fan Expo I spent a lot of time checking for a time when the line for Adam West's autograph was short only to find out about the $50 charge when the line is actually short. I just said "fuck it, I'm not paying that." (or something along those lines) and left. And complained about for the next little while. I mean there is only one actor I might be willing to pay that kind of money for an autograph from, and I could just buy one of his books for less. (Rai, you know who I'm talking about)
P.S. The guy who played Spock is Leonard Nemoy.

Oh it's more than sad. It's downright pathetic!
I'll give you another guess as to who I meant. You probably didn't know he wrote books but he is an actor I like enough to be willing to be pay for his autograph.

yes Bruce Campbell (I always seem to forget whether the 'p' or 'b' goes first so don't worry). And yes he writes books, such as: If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor, and Make Love! The Bruce Campbell Way. I should really read these books.
