Really bad books. |
|
Ever read a book you just wish you hadn't?
One that's comparable to a really bad fan fiction, or something a five year old who knows nothing of plot would come up with?
Warn others about it here!
Vampire Kisses. The worst book I've actually bothered to finish. It was a freaking train wreck. I felt like I was reading a bad vampire fan fiction. The main character was a 16 year old girl named Raven, black hair that had way too much description put into it (I THINK it was black, I've tried to push the memory out of my head), 'goth', the only 'non prep' in town save her best friend who was your classic side kick. She regularly got hands up on the local mega prep. She spends half the book trying to proove the new people in town are vampires, goes on a date with their son, 'falls in lurve' with him. Then has a party and blah blah blah, after she decides he's NOT a vampire sh finds out he IS. The story made it obvious what was going to happen, and when. The only thing I DIDN'T see coming was him turning out to be a vampire after they brought him out to NOT be one.
Did I mention that there is a sequal?
It's just horrible, and between it and the horridly blunt writing in "The Da Vinci code" (Mind you, I never finished that book. It may be a good story, but I found the writing to be blunt and tasteless, so I am not judging it as a story ) I have lost all faith in the future of literature. XD

the biggest names of book i hate are ones i read for school
Island of the Blue Dolphins... read in grade 6 AND 7... why two grades... cause in french immersion they read it is grade 6... i transfered to english for grade 7... ehrn they read that crappy book...
it's awful... but luckily it's pretty short and i didn't really ever fully read it... i just paid attention during note taking... i just couldn't force myself to read it
A time to kill bye John Grisham... read in grade 11... grated i hate this writer... his stuff is always 100 pages too long and so bad it made my eyes hurt... however his books translate very well into movies... i'll give him that
A lesson before Dieing... grade 12
notice i didn't say read... i pulled the same crap i did with Blue dolphin... but this one i just read random pages in class (when we were given time) and payed attention to every note... since she's the type of teacher who only tests and her little notes...
Lord of the Flies... grade 9 or 10 can't remember... it wasn't awful just tedious and the only two good characters die... which always annoys me
those are the ones i remember... because i was forced to read that crap... i do have more just have to think about it lol

The only book that comes to mind right now would be Catcher In The Rye. I never got the big hype around the book. Okay sure they guy who killed John Lennon had that book with him at the time he killed him. and said he got the idea from it. It's used as in Icon for misunderstood, loners. So because of these reasons I wanted to read it....I never finished it..GAH. sorry for anyone who lieks it..but this book was so pointless! he talks about meaningless things, such as who one guy was and who he dated...which in no way had anything to do with the story. I mean sure build a little story around the people, but hell he talks about how he shaved his face...WHAT IN THE WORLD!? bad book bad book

The closest thing i can think of to a book i wish i hadn't read is a book i've never been able to finish......Treasure Island......Now I know it's a classic and i have enjoy a number of movies based on it. However, The begining of the book is SOOO boring! I honestly tried a few times to read the book but so much time is wasted before the story leaves the bloody Inn where it starts! I'm sure the later parts of the book are awesome but I just can't get that far! it greatly frustrates me.
I'll just have to stick to watching Muppets Treasure Island....Much more entertaining and less mentally exhausting

Lol, it's a funny movie.
As for books so boring they are hard to start... well, I'm not sure I've ever had any of those, save this one school book about the life of thomas eddison.
However, it started when he was a kid. The writing was second grade level despite being a fourth grade book. On top of that, I've been at a post college reading level since I was about eight.
So yeah, I willingly got an F on that because it was more tedious than memorising a sheet of math problems.

another book i hate (well more the authors style) is anything done by C.S. Lewis... don't get me wrong... i love the lion the witch and the wardrobe... i just can't read it... the whole constant He said She said info that doesn't affect the story at all personally drives me nuts and makes me put it down and walk away...
maybe one day i'll strap myself to a chair and tape my eyes open and force myself to read the chronicles or Narnia... but for now i just can't do it...

XD I LIKE the dialogue. I mean now it's child's play, but I grew up on them (next to the lord of the rings and a few others) and found no problem. The Dialogue is what made me like the characters. I can't STAND characters that only talk about things purely plot relevant. They stop being people and end up as, well, frivilous little THINGS.

going off plot is fine... like i said it's the he said she said crap i hate
"how are you?" he said
"i'm well, you?" she said
(normally this is where authors stop typing the he said crap because most people can follow whats being said without it... not C.S. Lewis)
"fairly well, the wether looks bad" he said
"it does doesn't it" she said...
ect... that crap pisses me off more then a plot filled with holes... okay i take that back... but i do think it's annoying when you have to deal with stupid inane chatter and the constant reminder that he or she said it... just get on with it...

Let me just bring into note that there is rarely a scene with just two characters present in The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. And they're all talkative.

Lol, i don't mind 'inane chatter' because sometimes it has it's perpouse, but if you are talking about the litteral "He said." "She said." Rather than perhaps "She replied with a laugh." and it's after EVERY thing said, or at leas almost everything said - I can totally understand that. That and the lack of saying who was talking are two things that give me headaches now. Small snippets where you can TELL who is saying what is fine, but I've seen three pages of dialogue between four people and nothing was said of who said what.

I wasn't merely talking abut lion, witch and wardrobe... i'm more so referring to the entire series... i'm not saying the books are bad either... i'm just saying it's tedious and annoying to go through that... and obviously it wasn't a direct quote... just an example of what i've seen some writers do...
the only thing worse is in a book called "a lesson before Dieing" there are entire paragraphs where they never hit the enter button even though multiple people talk... it's right near the beginning so it made that book extremely painful.
I personally like it when an author stops saying who said what after a few lines if only two people are talking... and mention who speaking if there is a necessary action associated. otherwise something to do with the overall plot... even if it's something subtle... again personal opinion... not referring to any specific books just style wise...

Huh . . . I'd have to go with Stavaros on this one, a lot of the bad books on my shelf are the ones so tedious they made me cry blood.
Moby Dick by Washington Irving. If you're especially curious about uses for whale blubber, this book may actually be for you. Otherwise, it's just not.
The Lord of the Flies by William Golding made me go crosseyed reading it. The premise itself was just lame, and it didn't help that everything anyone said or did just pissed me off.
Brave New World by Aldous Huxley was possibly the epitome of all boring books. It was a sci-fi utopia novel about a future world where everyone is programmed from birth to behave the exact same way. I had to read this in Grade 12 English, and my teacher likened it to George Orwell's 1984. I would have preferred to read 1984, personally; at least things happen in that book.
I didn't like either Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire or Order of the Phoenix, not at all. After Prisoner of Azkaban it becomes too obvious that Rowling has lost all interest. I haven't even read Half-Blood Prince or Deathly Hallows yet, and I really don't have any overwhelming need to in the near future.
I have lots more, mostly "classics" which wouldn't be called so if people actually sat down and read them, but that's for another day.

Lol, they call them classics so they don't get thrown in a dust bin, in most cases.
I do like the premise for 'Brave new world' but it's sad to hear they executed it badly. I may find it at the library anyways.
